Sunburst's new video, Student Workshop: Building Character, helps students in grades 5 - 9 explore how to approach complex problems or dilemmas and begin thinking about what it means to have empathy, behave with integrity, show respect for others, and be a good citizen. Guided by an engaging older teen host, the Student Workshop: Building Character program invites viewers to bring their own experiences and questions to bear on the complex question, "What kind of person do I want to become?" The program is divided into four segments, 'Empathy,' 'Integrity,' 'Respect,' and 'Citizenship,' each presenting three realistic vignettes that invite viewers to grapple with the challenging social and ethical issues they present. The first scenario dealing with empathy shows how Lisa, after getting a low score on her statewide exams, is made to feel even worse by her friend Sabrina while her friend Larry helps her feel much better. In one of the situations dealing with integrity, Steve and Lisa want Mara to join them in shoplifting CDs from a music store that has a malfunctioning security system. Addressing the issue of respect is a scene in which Kevin scornfully ridicules Chris when he says he believes in reincarnation. A situation examining the issue of citizenship reveals Kate's dilemma over whether or not to tutor another student, instead of having that time free to do her artwork. The diverse array of compelling scenarios are open-ended, concluding with thought-provoking on-screen discussion questions that promote critical thinking and class discussion. The pauses between segments also allow students to work on the provided handouts. Watching and discussing the 23-minute video and working on the accompanying handouts helps students: • understand the meaning of empathy, integrity, respect, and good citizenship. • be more aware of the roles these qualities play in building character. • learn they have obligations to others as well as to themselves. • recognize that the development of character takes place over time. • realize many of the difficult choices they make in life depend on strength of character. The video comes with an 8 1/2 " x 11" Teacher's Guide in a sturdy 3-ring binder containing 12 reproducible handouts sheets, an extensive bibliography, and a complete transcript of the video program.
